Memories of Mrs. Wilhelm

1962 - 2002

I met Mrs. Wilhelm when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade because our families attended the same church - Glen Lutheran in Glen Burnie, MD. Our families were pretty compatible so we had some dinners at each other's houses and Susan and I became good friends. I was particularly impressed that Mrs. Wilhelm's first name was Ruth since that was my middle name (and Susan's as well). Mrs. Wilhelm was a very warm and friendly person and fervently religious. I recall she was very close to the Marsh family (Byron Marsh was the pastor of our congregation at that time - in the early 1960s.) Not only did Ruth set up lots of playdates to foster Susan's and my friendship, she always came up with fun activities for us, such as attending movies at the school, so it was kind of like a visit to summer camp when I'd get to go play with Susan. Since we lived in Harundale and the Wilhelms were in Arnold, it was a bit of a trip down Ritchie Highway to get to Susan's house, but both sets of parents made sure we got a chance to visit each other. Though Susan and I corresponded for years after we moved to Colorado and Susan visited us the year I was a senior in high school, we eventually lost touch. But Susan rekindled the friendship when she reconnected with my parents in 2001. Thanks to her and Charles, Ruth and my parents were able to reunite on the occasion of my parents' 50th anniversary in 2002. Though Ruth's memories were somewhat impaired by that point, she still remembered our family and the good old days of Glen Lutheran get-togethers and it was wonderful to see her! Thank you for making that trip possible as that reunion was a wonderful gift to everyone involved.
